Botox® / Dysport®

Botox® / Dysport® MontrealWrinkles in certain areas of the face are caused by facial muscles responsible for providing expression. Common examples are the horizontal folds in the forehead, the vertical folds between the eyes (frown lines) and the wrinkles on the sides of the eyes near the temple (Crow's feet). The repeated contraction of muscles over time causes the wrinkles to become more prominent and visible, giving an aged or angry appearance. The use of Botox® / Dysport® on these specific muscles relaxes them, eliminating the skin wrinkles. Botox® / Dysport® can also be used to revitalize several other facial areas, depending on the patient's anatomy and needs.

Botox® / Dysport® has a variety of applications in several areas of medicine and has been used for over 15 years with an excellent safety record. It is injected using a very fine needle to minimize discomfort. In expert hands, complications are very rare. When complications do occur, they are related to placement of the injection. If injected in the wrong location or muscle, it may be ineffective or cause unwanted weakening of certain muscles leading to an undesired result. Therefore, Botox® / Dysport® needs to be injected very precisely in the particular facial muscle responsible for the wrinkling. Since Dr. Samaha's expertise focuses exclusively on the face, he has a very detailed knowledge of the anatomy of the different facial muscles and is able to target them very precisely. This ability, combined with his appreciation of facial esthetics allows him to consistently obtain excellent results for his patients.

Botox® / Dysport® procedureBotox® / Dysport® is not a substitute for many of the rejuvenation surgeries discussed in this website. The wrinkles treated with Botox® / Dysport® cannot usually be addressed with facelift or blepharoplasty surgery, and vice versa. Therefore, for many patients, it is an adjunct to be used in combination with surgery rather than instead of surgery.

Some facial wrinkles are best addressed with injectable skin fillers or surgery rather than Botox® / Dysport®. To achieve optimal overall results, some patients may require Botox® / Dysport® alone or a combination treatment of Botox® / Dysport® with skin filler or surgery. Dr. Samaha's approach is tailored to the patient's needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any contra-indications to having Botox® / Dysport® injections?
There have been no reports of adverse effects of Botox® / Dysport® injections on pregnant women or nursing mothers but Dr. Samaha favors delaying injection of Botox® / Dysport® until the patient is no longer pregnant or nursing. Additionally, patients with certain specific neurologic illnesses are advised against Botox® / Dysport® injections.

What is the recovery?
No recovery period is necessary. Botox® / Dysport® is a simple injection given in the office with a very small needle. It takes 5-10 minutes and patients may carry on their daily activities immediately after their visit. Discomfort is very minimal and there is usually no bruising or any traces of the injections. Rarely, a small bruise develops at one of the injection points but it resolves quickly and can be concealed with makeup in the interim.

Do I see the result immediately?
No. It can take a few days before the Botox® / Dysport® takes effect. Usually 2-3 days but occasionally, it can take up to 2 weeks.

How long does it last?
Botox® / Dysport® injections last from 3 to 6 months depending on the patient and the specific region treated.

If I have Botox® / Dysport® repeatedly, will I need less dosage?
Though this seems to be a common belief, it is not the case. Usually, when the effect wears off, another treatment using a similar dosage is required to achieve the same effect.

If I don't repeat the injection will my skin become more wrinkled?
No. Once the effect of the Botox® / Dysport® wears off after a few months, the wrinkles treated reappear but the skin does not develop more wrinkling. It simply returns to its original appearance prior to the Botox® / Dysport®.
